The Bulgarian Socialist Party has formally approved interim PES leader Sergey Stanishev as its candidate for the European Socialists' permanent leader.

End of 2011 the leader of the Bulgarian Socialists was elected interim PES leader, after then-chair Poul Nyrup Rasmussen filed his resignation.

The Party of European Socialists has to elect a new permanent leader at a congress in the fall of 2012.

Saturday the National Council of the Bulgarian Socialist Party supported unanimously Stanishev's candidacy.

The socialist leader reiterated his commitment to work for a leftist and strongly socially oriented policy on the national and European levels.
