The climaxing heat wave that has gripped Bulgaria for weeks now has broken the temperature records for the date in 30 Bulgarian locations Sunday.
The data revealed by Bulgaria's weather service, the National Institute for Meteorolgy and Hydrology at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, list temperatures recorded through 6 pm Sunday.
The hottest place until then was Lovech in northern Bulgaria with 41.4 degrees Celsius, followed by two northwestern cities, Svishtov and Montana with 41 C, Pazardzhik in the south - 40. 7 C, Ruse in the north - 40.6 C, northwestern Vratsa with 40.2 C, and southwestern Sandanski with 40.
A number of other locations marked record temperatures just below 40 degrees Celsius, equal to 104 degrees Fahrenheit.
Albeit somewhat lower, temperature in capital Sofia at 37.5 C also broke historical records for the date, as was the case on some of Bulgaria's tallest mountains.
Sunday the National Institute for Meteorolgy and Hydrology had issued for the first time in history code red for extremely dangerous weather - for the Pleven, Ruse and Veliko Tarnovo regions in the north, while all other regions in Bulgaria have been placed under the medium code orange.
For Monday, the Institute has imposed a milder code yellow for most of the country, with comparatively cooler air expected to drop temperatures in the 30-38 C range, with heat persisting in the east.
