A Turkish military fighter jet has been downed over the Mediterranean, according to information by Turkey's government.

The fighter jet disappeared in flight over the sea Friday, and it later surfaced that it has been intercepted and shot down by the Syrian military.

"After an assessment of available data and information received during the rescuing of the pilots, it became clear that our plane has been downed by Syria," reads a statement released by the office of Turkish PM Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

According to Turkish cabinet reports, Syrian authorities have earlier expressed their regret for having had to down the Turkish plane.

According to a statement by Turkish President Abdullah Gul, the jet might have unintentionally encroached upon Syrian airspace.

The crew of the fighter jet are believed to have escaped and survived; a search is under way.
