Bulgarian scientists are unable to research earthquake faults around the country because of a lack of funds, according to geologists from the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences.

On Tuesday, the BAS scientists completed its report on the May 22 earthquake, which rattled Sofia, Pernik, and the rest of Western Bulgaria with a magnitude of 5.8-6.0 on the Richter Scale, the Bulgarian National Radio reported.

The findings of the geologists have indicated that the fault that caused the Pernik Earthquake is one of the smallest in the region.

Larger faults nearby remain unexplored because the Academy has no money to fund the respective research activities, explained Ass. Prof. Alexander Radulov from the BAS team.

He added that the periods of repetition and the maximum magnitudes of the other faults remain unknown. Some of them have not even been mapped, he noted.

Radulov further called for the creation of an "adequate" seismic map of Bulgaria, urging the government to pay attention to scientific research in the field.

"Bulgaria should learn from the experience of neighboring states such as Turkey and Romania," he added.
