Bulgaria's Interior Ministry spent nearly half of the money earmarked for special surveillance devices in 2012 by end-March, according to a report for the institution's expenses for the first quarter of the year.

Bulgaria's 2012 State Budget Act initially provided for a total of BGN 19 622 100 for operative-technical activities of the Interior, which were subsequently increased to BGN 19 716 100, of which BGN 8 020 430 have already been spent, according to reports of news portal mediapool.bg.

The news about the quickly evaporating budget for special surveillance devices comes against the backdrop of a steep decrease in the application of this method of investigation in 2011, as registered in reports of Bulgaria's prosecuting authority and courts published a few months ago.

The Sofia City Court, which bears the heaviest workload as regards oversight over the use of special surveillance devices in Bulgaria, issued a total of 6008 permits for the deployment of surveillance equipment in 2011, down by about 200 as compared to 2010.

The deployment of special surveillance devices in 2011 yielded only 800 items of material evidence.

According to reports of the Sofia City Prosecutor's Office, the cases involving special surveillance devices in 2011 decreased by 2059 from 2010.
