Engine problems may have been the cause of the tragic plane crash in the Nigerian city of Lagos on Sunday in which over 150 people perished.

The Boeing MD-83 operated by Lagos-based company Dana Air crashed into a printing works and residential buildings before bursting into flames, killing all 153 passengers on board and others on the ground, with the exact death toll remaining unclear.

The flight's pilots radioed to the Lagos control tower just before the crash, saying the plane had engine trouble, a military official has said, as cited by msnbc. The official spoke on condition of anonymity as he was not authorized to speak to journalists.

Three days of mourning have begun in Nigeria, BBC has informed.

In a statement, President Goodluck Jonathan said he had ordered the "fullest possible" investigation into the crash.
