Egyptians Rally against Mubarak Sentence

World | June 3, 2012, Sunday // 10:16

Hundreds of Egyptian citizens have gathered on the Tahrir square in Cairo to voice their discontent with the trial against ex-President Hosni Mubarak, which they say was overly protective of the accused.

Saturday the 84-year-old Mubarak received a life sentence for failing to prevent bloodshed in tackling popular unrest that grappled Egypt in early 2011.

Parts of Egyptian society are happy with justice being served against their former dictator, but others say that the trial was protective of Mubarak and his subordinates.

The judge did not convict Mubarak or any of the other accused with intentionally ordering repressions against protesters, only with failing to prevent violence.

Mubarak's Minister of Interior, Habib el-Adly, as well as other senior security officials were also convicted on a similar charge.

Sunday protesters at Tahrir said they will stay through the day and on to the the next day, with the expectation that many more will join to express their discontent.
