Fuel excise duty in the EU should be proportional to the gross domestic product or the purchasing power parity per capita of the population, according to Bulgaria's Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Simeon Djankov.
Speaking Thursday at a joint press conference with Lukoil President Vagit Alekperov, he noted that it was not normal to apply the same excise tax rates in Bulgaria and in rich European countries.
The President of the Russian energy giant explained that end consumer prices of fuels were determined, by global prices of raw materials and the specific country's tax policy on the one hand, and by the company's policy on the other.
Alekperov congratulated Bulgaria on the steps taken to decrease fuel excise duty in the EU.
