Ukrainian Woman Detained in Sunny Beach After Attempted Bribery of Police Officers
Bulgarian authorities found themselves grappling with a peculiar case involving a 60-year-old Ukrainian woman
Bulgaria's police authorities will employ megaphones in order to alert the population in case an earthquake with a magnitude stronger than 4 on the Richter scale happens to rattle the country.
The measure was announced on Monday by Bulgarian Interior Ministry Tsvetan Tsvetanov, who visited the Southwestern region of Pernik that was jolted by a 5.8-6 magnitude earthquake last Tuesday.
Tsvetanov has explained that the police's role will be to inform those who have left their homes about the earthquake's magnitude.
"We also rely on the media to inform people," he told reporters. The Interior Minister believes that megaphone alerts would not trigger panic among the population.
According to Tsvetanov, Bulgaria's emergency siren system would have caused unnecessary panic if it was used during the earthquake that shook the country at 3:00 am local time last Tuesday.
The epicenter of Tuesday's earthquake was about 6 km from the city of Pernik and approximately 25 km from the capital Sofia. The quake was followed by numerous slight aftershocks.
