Bulgaria's government has established a consultative council that is supposed to help it form national policies for protection against disasters.

The move follows the relatively strong earthquake that shook the country on Tuesday.

The earthquake had a magnitude of about 5.9-6.0 on the Richter scale and struck at 2:58 am Tuesday morning. Its epicenter was about 6 km from the city of Pernik and approximately 25 km from the capital Sofia.

The new consultative council is expected to develop strategies for decreasing disaster risks and the implementation of monitoring systems.

The body is to be headed by Bulgarian Interior Minister Tsvetan Tsvetanov. The heads of several institutions will take part in it, including the State National Security Agency, the State Agency State Reserve and War-time Stocks, the Bulgarian Nuclear Regulatory Agency and the Bulgarian Red Cross.
