Sofia's Lunar Festival of Lights is back, illuminating the city with more than 20 captivating light installations across its most iconic landmarks.
Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borisov has reassured the nation that the government authorites have taken all necessary safety measures in the wake of the 5.8-5.9 magnitude earthquake that has jolted Western Bulgaria.
Borisov spoke to journalists early on Tuesday to alleviate fears after the strong earthquake that hit Sofia and its surroundings.
"Right after the earthquake struck, I talked to the seismologists on duty and the 112 emergency center are preparing a summary of the situation in the country. We have taken all necessary steps to protect the population," Prime Minister Boyko Borisov said early on Tuesday morning.
"Let us hope that it shall not strike again. According to the information I have at this stage, the jolt was felt strongest between Sofia and Pernik. I know that the people got panicked. It is only natural to get frightened after such a strong quake," Borisov added.
An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.8 on the Richter scale shook Bulgaria's capital early on Tuesday.
The jolt struck at 3:00am local time, about 24km west of the city and at a depth of 9.2km, according to reports of the US Geological Survey.
No casualties were reported after the quake and the damages are still being estimated.
