NATO leaders assembled on a summit in Chicago decided to hand control over security in Afghanistan to Afghan security forces by the middle of 2013.

Foreign military units, acting in Afghanistan in the ISAF mission headed by NATO, will gradually move from combat to support missions, reported agencies.

In a declaration adopted in Chicago, US President Barack Obama and 27 other Alliance leaders further confirmed plans to withdraw their service people by the end 2014, leaving behind only a mission for training local forces.

On Sunday, NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen had stated that Treaty forces will be in "no rush for the exits."

The upcoming 2014 presidential elections in Afghanistan are set to be another major topic at the NATO summit.
