Northern Italy has been shaken by a very strong earthquake just hours after a 16-year-old girl was killed and other students were injured by bomb in front of a school in Brindisi in the south.

BBC reports Sunday, citing local officials, that the quake has killed at least three people and caused thousands of others to flee into the streets.

The 5.9-magnitude on the Richter scale quake struck in the middle of the night, about 35km (22 miles) north of the city of Bologna.

Local officials inform the three victims were working night shifts at the time the buildings collapsed.

Italian TV showed damaged factories and church steeples in the region. Aftershocks have been reported as well.

Rescue teams are searching the area and the dead toll is expected to rise since many are said to be buried under rubble.

The earthquake was at a relatively shallow depth of 10km.
