A 16-year-old girl was killed and at least six students were injured as a bomb exploded in front of a school in the southern Italian city of Brindisi on Saturday.
The blast went off as students were arriving at the Francesca Morvillo Falcone vocational school at around 07:45 local time.
Mimmo Consales, the mayor of Brindisi, has blamed local mafia for the explosion. As yet, no one has claimed responsibility for the blast.
Reports say the explosive device had been placed in a rubbish container outside the school. It is unclear if one or two devices exploded, but one account suggests that the explosives had been in bags, BBC informs.
The Guardian has reminded that the school is named after the anti-mafia prosecutor Giovanni Falcone and his wife, who were killed by a mafia bomb in Sicily 20 years ago this weekend.
