Bulgaria's Charge d'Affaires in Yemen, who was injured over the weekend in a kidnap attempt against him in Sana, has arrived in the capital Sofia for medical treatment.

Boris Borisov was hurt after masked gunmen opened fire at his vehicle in an attempt to kidnap him on Sunday.

"The attackers tried to pull me out of the car, pounded upon it with their rifle butts, fired in the air. I did not fight with them, I just refused to do what they ordered me to do," Borisov told bTV channel.

Both his eyes got injured in the attack after being hit by pieces from the broken window of the car.

Borisov says he is not afraid to go back to Sana and do his job, but unofficial information says he will be provided with security guards when outside the building of the diplomatic mission.

Boris Borisov was with his wife at the time of the attack. Three armed men tried to abduct him from his vehicle. When he refused to come out and drove ahead, they opened fire at the automobile. Borisov had been injured in the eye by glass from the broken window.

The couple managed to flee to a nearby shopping center. The Yemeni security services arrived shortly after the incident. Borisov and his wife had not been accompanied by the Embassy's security.

The people behind the attack remain unknown. Such incidents are frequent occurrence in Yemen where the hostages are used by different tribes for demands to the authorities and are often released unharmed.

The Charge D'Affaires is known in diplomatic circles as a topnotch professional. He has studied in Iraq and is fluent in Arabic, Russian and English. He has worked in Tripoli and at the "Middle East and North Africa" Department of the Foreign Affairs Ministry.
