The head of the European Commission said Europe wants Greece to remain part of the euro zone, but stressed there was "no way" of changing the terms of a 130-billion-euro bailout agreed.

"As far as Greece is concerned, I would like to reaffirm very clearly that we want Greece to stay in the euro area. And the European Union will do all it takes to ensure it," EC President Jose Manuel Barroso said in prepared remarks to the United Nations.

"We will honor our commitments toward Greece and we expect the Greek government - current and future - to fulfill jointly agreed conditions for financial assistance," Barroso said, referring to the Greek elections and the support that voters gave to anti-austerity parties.

Barroso said that while the EU respects the will of the Greek people and their vote, it also must bear in mind the will of the 16 other euro area nations that have agreed on conditions for giving Greece financial assistance.

Barroso is taking part in the United Nations General Assembly High-Level Thematic Debate on the State of the World Economy and Finance in 2012. It is bringing together high level ministers, mainly from emerging market nations in Europe, Middle East, Africa and Latin America.

Greece faced anew the risk of default and exit from the euro zone after voters rejected earlier this month austerity and the terms of the country's bailout from the European Union and International Monetary Fund.

No party won a majority in the May 6 election.

Greece will hold fresh elections on 17 June and a judge has been appointed to head an interim government.

Council of State president Panagiotis Pikramenos will head the caretaker government until the election.

The election date was announced after final talks to form a coalition failed on Tuesday, raising new concerns over Greece's eurozone future.

Fitch ratings agency warned last week that all euro-area countries would face the risk of a downgrade if Greece exits the 17-nation single currency bloc.
