Anna Yaneva is the new Chair of the Socialists' Sofia organization after the withdrawal of Rumen Ovcharov.
Rumen Ovcharov, one of the most influential figures of Bulgaria's main opposition party, the Bulgarian Socialist Party, who held the post for 12 years, quit Saturday, designating Yaneva as his successor. She was also his Deputy Economy Minister at the time he was Minister of Economy and Energy in the cabinet of the Three-Way Coalition.
Yaneva will have to leave the Parliament because the party code bans mixing political and public positions.
The new "red" Chair was elected at run-off in a race with Boris Tsekov and the publisher of the Socialist newspaper "Duma," Nikolay Malinov.
