Greece to Make Last Bid at Forming Compromise Govt

World | May 12, 2012, Saturday // 10:04

Greek President Karolos Papoulias will call political parties Sunday on consultation in a last attempt to convince them to broker a national unity government.

Friday the third mandate was returned to Papoulias by PASOK leader Evangelos Venizelos, after he in turn failed to reach a coalition agreement with other parties.

Prior to him, New Democracy's Antonis Samaras and radical left Syriza leader Alexis Tsipras also failed to broker a coalition government.

The May 6 early parliamentary elections in Greece left the Hellenic Parliament severely fragmented, and with a deep division between pro- and anti-austerity parties.

Now President Papoulias is expected to press political leaders to reach an agreement and end the severe political instability that has grappled Greece in the wake of the financial crisis.

Should talks led by the President fail, Greece will be set for new snap elections, early June or July.
