Some 2 000 people have rallied in the northern Bulgarian city of Pleven in support for the Belene nuclear power plant project, which has been abandoned by Bulgaria's Borisov Cabinet.
The mass rally in Pleven, which is located close to the Danube town of Belene that was supposed to host the second Bulgarian NPP, was organized by an initiative committee called, "I Won't Give Up on Belene, Will You?"
The regional organization of the Confederation of Independent Bulgarian Syndicates (KNSB), a trade union, backed up the rally, which is the third such rally in Northern Bulgaria in the past week.
"We have supporters in the Districts of Pleven, Vratsa, and Montana, all over Northern Bulgaria," said Krasimir Todorov, deputy head of the committee and a town councilor from Belene, as cited by BNR.
Much of Northern Bulgaria had been looking forward to the construction of the Belene NPP as a chance for economic liftoff.
After almost three years of balking at it, the Borisov Cabinet abandoned the NPP project in March 2012, declaring it to be "economically unfeasible". The plant was supposed to be built by Russian company Atomstroyexport.
