The Sofia Municipality has checked 554 owners of dogs in 46 operations conducted in the past two months.

As little as 7% of the dog owners were found in breach of the law, with 12 people fined with BGN 10 and 26 people issued protocols with recommendations.

The checks were conducted by the Sofia Municipality Inspectorate and the Sofia municipal police.

Apart from that, 68 checks were conducted on tip-offs from citizens, with 12 dog owners fined and 9 people issued protocols with recommendations.

Another 10 checks have been scheduled by end-April.

The total number of stray dogs in Sofia remains unknown but unofficial statistics put the figure at 200 000.

The problem with the stray dogs in Sofia came into the spotlight over the demise of Professor Botio Tachkov, a renowned economist, who died Sunday after being brutally attacked by a pack of stray dogs.

The accident triggered public outrage, as the city has been struggling to cope with its increasing stray dog population for years now.

Only 1000 dogs have been registered with the Sofia Municipality since the beginning of the year.

A total of 5000 dog owners have so far complied with the regulations and registered their pet.

The Food Safety Agency at the Agriculture Ministry is under obligation to keep an electronic register of animals, including pet dogs.

However, at this stage the register only exists on paper and no municipality is feeding data into it.

The Sofia Municipality is working on a plan to engage citizens more actively in the registration campaign.
