A man has been killed in a mass fight in the village of Pravishte near Bulgaria's second-largest city Plovdiv.

Police have arrested 12 locals, ages 15-61, whom they believe were involved in the fight.

The 45-year-old man perished on the way to the hospital after being hit at the head with an axe and stabbed in the chest.

The tragic incident occurred Friday evening when a group of local youth started throwing stones at a building that housed workers from another village.

The victim and his brother, who live in Plovdiv and were visiting their parents, tried to appease the fight that ensued, after which they in turn were attacked.

The 41-year-old brother of the killed man is hospitalized after been hit at the head with a pipe.

Police were immediately deployed in Pravishte and have stayed there Saturday to prevent any possible re-ignition of the conflict.
