The idea of the sweet bread that Bulgarians traditionally make and eat for Easter might have been imported from Romania about a century ago.
The special type of bread is popular all over Eastern Europe and parts of the Middle East, and Bulgarian ethnologist Donka Sabotinova thinks it most probably came to Bulgaria via Romania.
"Traditionally, Bulgarians baked special ritual breads for Easter. But traders brought in sweet bread from Romania around 1915-1920," said Sabotinova, reports the Bulgarian News Agency.
Since then, it has caught as an essential part of the traditional Bulgarian Easter festive meal.
The sweet bread, or Easter cake is called with a very similar word in the two languages - "cozonac" in Romanian and "kozunak" in Bulgaria.
According to Sabotinova, the sweet bread recipe most probably came to Romania from Poland.
Holy Saturday is the day Bulgarians traditionally knead and bake the Easter sweet bread and other ritual breads for the feast.
