Doctor Robert Ballard, who discovered the exact location of the remains of the Titanic` and the `Bismarck`, will search for evidence that the Biblical deluge started in the Black Sea some 7,500 years ago. Ballard has already gathered evidence that a great portion of the Black Sea coast was submerged by a catastrophic deluge some 7,500 years ago. According the Biblical myth, the deluge started in the Middle East in 2,400 BC. The Bulgarian-American expedition will search for underwater
remains from ancient settlements and ships. The Council of Ministers approved the August 15-31 implementation of the Bulgaria-US project `Black Sea 2001: Hydrolocator Research`.

Professor Petko Dimitrov from the Institute on Oceanology will head the 10-strong Bulgarian team. In 1985, Dimitrov unearthed a find which proves the existence of a highly advanced civilization along the Black Sea coast: a clay plate whose perfect proportions suggest it was moulded on a potter`s wheel. The decoration of the plate helped archaeologists date it at 7,000-8,000 years.

The expedition will have at its disposal the `Academic` ship and a mini-submersible with unique equipment provided by the Americans.The first task of the scientists will be to map out the sea bed at the Danube delta with the help of a sonar. In case any remains from ancient life are uncovered, the expedition will return to examine them thoroughly in 2003.
