5 Bulgarians Arrested in Italy for Illegal Trafficking in Antique Coins
Five Bulgarian nationals have been arrested in Italy for illegal trafficking in antique coins.
Police have seized a pile of cultural historic objects from the home of a 45-year old man in the southern Bulgarian village of Drangovo, according to a statement of the Interior Ministry.
During the search of the premises on Tuesday, police officers from the regional police department in Kirkovo found some 61 antique looking statues and 8 coins.
Experts claimed that the finds were exceptionally valuable.
According to initial data, the man dug out the valuable items in an area near the border.
The man had returned from Germany abut two months ago and had brought with him exploration equipment.
The finds were detected with a metal detector, after which the man dug them out and carried them home.
The offender was detained Tuesday for a period of 24 hours at the police department in Kirkovo.
Experts suggested that the site had not been examined by treasure hunters due to its vicinity to the border with Greece.
The statues and the coins are stored at the police department in Kirkovo.
The metal detector was also seized.
Pre-trial proceedings have been opened against the man and expert examinations are yet to be assigned.
Work on the case continues.
