Over 40 000 stray dogs are roaming the streets of Bulgarian capital Sofia, according to a former employee of the Ecobalance municipal company.

The growing population is a key reason for the emerging dangerous packs of stray dogs, the former employee, Svetoslav Slaveykov, has told news.bg.

"Yavorov", "Nadezhda 2", Druzhba 2", "Loven Park" and "Mladost" are the districts in Sofia in which packs are most densely concentrated and where the highest danger exists of accidents.

However, he pointed out that new packs may form in other districts, too.

On Wednesday, 88-year-old economist Boteo Tachkov was brutally attacked by a large pack of stray dogs in the Malinova Dolina quarter in the Bulgarian capital. The man's life is still in danger.

Prior to being reelected at the end of October 2011, Sofia Mayor Yordanka Fandakova vowed to "cut down in half the number of stray dogs in the Bulgarian capital the next two years."

On Thursday, Fandakova claimed there is no other way of solving this issue besides an increased and massive neutering and the construction of new shelters

An average of 800-900 cases of tapeworm infection are registered in Bulgaria each year. This number constitutes as much as 54% of the total instances per year in the whole EU.
