Rallies under the banner "Safe Streets" took place in six Bulgarian cities Sunday to call for more responsible driving and greater safety for pedestrians.
Hundreds, including relatives of traffic accidents victims, walked out in Sofia, Pleven, Varna, Veliko Tarnovo, Plovdiv and Simeonovgrad.
The Sofia rally was largest, with 300 gathering at the National Palace of Culture and proceeded to march through the center of the city.
Protesters requested changes of legislation requiring harsher sentences for people who have caused a death or impairment on the road.
In particular, they requested the elimination of suspended sentences for such crimes, and the treatment of killing on the road by drunk drivers or people without driving licenses as murder.
Protesters left in front of the Hall of Justice in Sofia flowers and copies of what they saw as weak sentences for similar cases.
Dozens gathered in Pleven and Simeonovgrad, where in a particularly unfortunate incident a driver lost control of his car and killed 6 youths waiting at a bus stop.
