Annan to Resume Talks with Assad in Syria

World | March 11, 2012, Sunday // 11:39

Special UN and Arab League to Syria Kofi Annan is to hold a second round of talks with Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad Sunday.

Annan is in Damascus to try to negotiate a ceasefire between the government and rebel forces who have engaged in a conflict raging for months now.

Meanwhile, over the end of the week, continuing heavy fighting has been reported in the city of Homs, center of much of the unrest, in spite of a calming of the situation earlier on.

Saturday Annan talked with Assad, who rejected any political dialogue while "armed terrorist groups" were operating in the country, reports the BBC.

On the second round of talks, the former UN Secretary General hopes to achieve more progress on the matter, and arrange for humanitarian access to affected areas.

In addition, Annan plans to travel to neighboring countries to consult on the situation in Syria. While in Syria, Annan will stay in Damascus and will not be allowed to travel to Homs.
