Bulgaria: Dutch Party’s Xenophobic Website Reaches EC File photo of Bulgarian MEP Iliana Ivanova

Iliana Ivanova, a Bulgarian MEP from the European People's Party, has approached the European Commission regarding a xenophobic website created by the Dutch populist Freedom Party.

The site, titled "Complaints about Central and Eastern Europeans," boasts slogans such as "Do you have problems with people from Central and Eastern Europe?" and "Have you lost your job because of a Pole, a Bulgarian, a Romanian? We want to know." It also displays media headlines reporting how Eastern Europeans commit more and more crime.

"Actions like this are outrageous. This site promotes racism and xenophobia among the Dutch citizens, creates unfounded fears and encourages discrimination against people from Central and Eastern Europe," the Bulgarian MEP has commented, demanding that the European Commission investigate the case and take the necessary measures.

Ivanova has acted after receiving a signal from worried members of the Bulgarian community in the Netherlands.

Dutch employers' organization head Bernard Wientjes has also expressed his concerns about the xenophobic website, declaring that his country's government should distance itself from it.

The populist party has an alliance with the minority government, which it supports on economic policy in return for tougher immigration rules.
