Starting 1 am Friday Bulgaria is stopping the export of electricity due to higher domestic consumption in exceptionally cold winter conditions.
The decision has been taken due to a deficit of some 400 MW/h on average, reads an official statement of the Bulgarian Ministry of Economy and Energy.
The Ministry says that Bulgaria's energy system is currently working with no reserves and at full power, including hydroelectric power stations.
Additional electricity shortage has been caused by a failure at the Galabovo power plant, says the Ministry.
The statement adds that electricity export will be resumed as soon as the needed reserves are regained.
Since Sunday, Bulgaria has been hit by a Mediterannean and a Siberian cyclone, which brought heavy precipitation and unusually cold temperatures, with lows for most of the country Thursday hovering around -20 C.
