The families of the eight victims of Monday's flood in Bulgaria will be compensated with BGN 10 000 each, the country's Prime Minister Boyko Borisov revealed on Wednesday.
The measure is to be approved at Wednesday's regular cabinet sitting, Borisov told the Bulgarian National Television.
The Prime Minister described the situation in the distressed communities of Biser, Harmanli and Svilengrad as "a natural disaster", adding that the damages "could not be measured in kilograms."
"We reacted adequately. We arrived immediately," Bortisov stated. However, he admitted that no one expected a dam to burst and cause a massive flood in such cold weather conditions.
"We expected it to happen during the spring – in March or April," he said.
Upon asked about the expected European Commission aid, the Prime Minister pointed out that the whole of Europe was currently distressed and everyone was seeking help.
On Wednesday, Borisov and EU Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid, Crisis Response and International Cooperation Kristalina Georgieva will seek to inspect the damages in the area in order to discuss the opportunities for aid that the European Commission can offer.
A total of eight people perished on Monday as a dam wall burst and flooded the southern village of Biser, while two are still missing.
