Bulgaria Proposes Lowering Highway Speed Limits
The Bulgarian government has proposed a significant change to the country's road traffic regulations, aiming to reduce the maximum speed limit on highways from 140 km/h to 130 km/h
Roads in Bulgaria are operating under heavy wintry conditions Sunday, after heavy snowfall set in the country Saturday.
Tens of thousands are still without electricity, especially in small remote villages in central northern and southern Bulgaria.
The Hemus Highway linking Bulgaria's north and south, which was the site of a major road jam Saturday evening, has now been unclogged, but traffic is conducted in one lane only.
Trucks are also temporarily banned from travelling on Hemus and will have to wait. Cleaning machines from the Sofia Airport have been mobilized to help clean the other lane.
Sunday morning an emergency meeting was called by Bulgarian Minister of Interior Tsvetanov, featuring other senior government officials, in order to deal with the situation.
"Additional police teams are being directed towards the problematic points to help regulate the traffic," said Tsvetanov after the meeting.
Some people have also been reported blocked in various mountain huts across the country, with no road access due to snow drifts.
Fortunately, Sunday snowfall has ceased and is not expected to resume with any significant intensity.
