Iranian scientists have succeeded in producing the country's first nuclear fuel rod, the Iranian nuclear agency announced on Sunday.
"Scientists and researchers at the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran have succeeded in producing and testing the first sample of a nuclear fuel rod," said the announcement.
The achievement has been praised by local media as a feat of engineering the West had doubted Tehran capable of. Iran is now among the few countries that can manufacture both nuclear fuel rods and plates, Tehran Times has stated.
Nuclear fuel rods are tubes containing pellets of enriched uranium that provide fuel for nuclear reactors.
The West, led by the United States, suspects Iran of pursuing a secret nuclear weapons program, but the Islamic Republic insists it needs nuclear power only for civilian purposes.
Earlier on Sunday, it was reported that Iran's military has successfully conducted a medium-range surface-to-air missile test near the strategic Strait of Hormuz
