It is quite possible for Bulgaria and Romania to come up with a joint candidacy to host the European football championship in 2020, Bulgarian Football Union head Borislav Mihaylov has announced.
There are no reasons for Bulgaria not to run for hosting Euro 2020, Mihaylov told the Bulgarian National Television on Monday. He believes that the Bulgarian state can meet all required conditions to co-host one of the world's biggest international sport events.
"I discussed the matter with a Romanian colleague of mine, but this is a very distant perspective. There is a lot of time until then," the former international goalkeeper added. He pointed out that a new stadium is to be constructed in Sofia, as well as potential new stadiums in the Black Sea cities of Varna and Burgas.
The idea for Bulgaria and Romania's joint candidacy occurred in March 2011, when Mihaylov was elected among the members of UEFA's executive committee.
On Friday, the draw took place for Euro 2012 in Poland and Ukraine.
Euro 2012 will be the last tournament to be staged with 16 teams. The tournament expands to 24 nations at its next edition in 2016 in France.
