Lothar Matthaeus, Bulgaria's former national football coach is still in disbelief as to the reason why he was fired by the country's football union two months ago.

"I believed I would be working longer in Bulgaria. That is what we had discussed with (President of the Bulgarian Football Union) Borislav Mihaylov three or four months ago when we played against Belarus," Matthaeus told Bulgarian reporters on Wednesday.

However, the football union suddenly decided to get rid of the German coach without giving him any explanation, he revealed.

"I was giving my best. I followed Bulgaria's football and I was closely connected with the country. I was visiting the players who were based outside Bulgaria...I was part of the Bulgarian football and that will remain with me for the rest of my life," Matthaeus said, as cited by Vesti.bg.

Matthaeus was fired in September over poor results and fierce opposition from the dressing room. He was succeeded by former Valencia and Atletico Mardid striker Lyuboslav Penev.

Bulgaria showed a dismal performance in the Euro 2012 qualifiers, slipping to the record low 85th place in the international FIFA ranking. The Balkan squad finished last in its qualifying group with just 5 points.
