The Patriarch of Antioch, Ignatius IV, has stated that international media lie regarding the situation in Syria, where according to him there is no wanton violence to protesters, reported Syrian state agency SANA.

During a meeting with a delegation of Bulgarian academic and media figures currently visiting Syria, the Christian Orthodox Patriarch said that all Syrians – Muslims and Christians alike – live in harmony and peace, warning against the conspiracy targeting Syria, writes SANA.

Patriarch Ignatius IV also said that in particular Christians in Syria are not the targets of violence, as some media reports have been suggesting.

According to UN data, more 3,500 persons have lost their lives since the start of pro-democracy protests in March, which were crushed by military deployed by embattled President Bashar Al-Assad. Tens of thousands have fled to neighboring Turkey.

Ignatius IV Hazim is Greek Orthodox Patriarch of Antioch and All the East, head of one of the 14 mutually recognized Christian Orthodox autocephalous churches.
