Leader of Bulgarian rightist party Union of Democratic Forces Martin Dimitrov survived a internal confidence vote which he called due to the party's disastrous showing in presidential elections end of October.
Out of 102 UDF National Council members, 75 were present at Tuesday's sitting, only 57 cast ballots for the confidence vote.
Of the 57 votes, 45 were in favor of Dimitrov, who thus did not get a majority support by the National Council, but nevertheless survived the confidence vote.
Not all representatives of the Sofia UDF unit voted for Dimitrov; those from Plovdiv and Veliko Tarnovo abstained; members from Lovech and Blagoevgrad voted "against", while representativs from 6 regional units were absent from the sitting.
"For me, the more important question is what comes next," said Martin Dimitrov after the vote, adding he will continue pursuing a policy of stabilizing the internal structure of the party and its position in Bulgarian political life.
In particular, Dimitrov said that the Union will position itself as "an intelligent opposition" to ruling center-right GERB party, but will also work against a future coming to power of arch-rival of old, the Bulgarian Socialist Party.
"Those elections were a rehearsal for GERB. They saw that the victors don't get judged. So they will try to cash in their results on the next parlamentary elections, 2013 or earlier," said the UDF leader.
A the same time, Dimitrov conceded that the party had made a number of mistakes in its presidential campaign, including launching its candidate Rumen Hristov too late.
At the first round of the presidential race, the UDF tandem of Rumen Hristov and VP candidate Emanuil Yordanov received just below 2.5%.
