Bulgarian Krasimir Georgiev plans to run the Beirut International Marathon barefoot in a bid to boost the popularity of the sport and promote the health benefits it offers.

The 2011 edition of the annual marathon will be held on November 27 and the participants will have to complete the classic 42.2km distance.

Marathon running barefoot is nothing new, but it will be the first time that it will be done by a Bulgarian, Georgiev's team says, as cited by dnevnik.bg.

He has taken part in more than 25 long-distance running events in London, Prague, Edinburgh, Briton, Morocco, etc in the five past years.

Georgiev set a personal record at the Death Marsh marathon in Scotland by running 130 km in 21.50 hours.

Georgiev is convinced of the therapeutic effect of barefoot running and says that he cured an Achilles tendon by practicing the sport.

According to the barefoot runner, the activity is ideal for for the prophylaxis of joint problems.

Georgiev also plans to organize a special 24-hour barefoot marathon in Sofia so as to be able to reach young Bulgarians and inspire them to play sport.
