The Arab League has suspended the membership of Syria in the organization at a special sitting Saturday devoted on events in the country.
The EU has stated it fully backs the decision and joined the Arab League in vows to implement further sanctions against Syria.
The Arab League has called on member states to recall their ambassadors from Damascus, and has said it will hold talks with Syrian opposition on the future of the country.
Syria has protested the decision, with official delegate Youssef al-Ahmed saying it is in breach of the Arab League's statute and has been taken under the influence of Western powers.
"We fully support today's decisions of the Arab League that have shown the growing isolation of the Syrian," stated EU High Representative for External Affairs Catherine Ashton.
According to UN data, more than 3,000 persons have lost their lives after pro-democracy protests were made to face heavily armed military by embattled Syrian president Bashar Al-Assad.
