Bulgaria: Regional CIA Office to Move from Sofia to Belgrade - Report

The Balkan CIA office will shortly move from Bulgarian capital Sofia to capital of neighboring Serbia Belgrade, according to Serbian sources.

According to some Serbian security sources, cited by Bulgarian Darik Radio, the US has favored Belgrade, as it provides a great strategic location for monitoring both Eastern Europe and the Adriatic Sea area.

Reports say that the new CIA center is set to be located in the new US embassy complex in the fancy Belgrade quarter of Dedine. Construction of the new diplomatic facility is set to be finished in August 2012.

Some intelligence sources in Serbia have nevertheless said that they have no information that CIA intends the Sofia-Belgrade move.

While some in Serbia have feared that the move might compromise Serbian national security, Jovan Stojic from the Serbian BIA intelligence agency recalled that 55 services from 44 countries are currently operating in Serbia, exchanging information of mutual interest with Serbian authorities.
