Bulgaria: Bulgarian Bank Teller Charged with Pocketing BGN 21 M Denied Bail Petko Milevski, a former head teller at Alpha Bank accused of draining BGN 21 M from the bank, has been denied bail and has been returned to custody. File photo

Petko Mitevski, a former Alpha Bank employee accused of draining close to BGN 21 M from the bank, has been returned to custody.

On Thursday, the Sofia Appellate Court canceled the decision of the Sofia City Court for his release on a BGN 40 000 bail.

The main reason for denying bail to the former head bank teller was the gravity of the offence.

The prosecution claimed that Petko Mitevski had been taking out money from the bank vault for two years, carrying the banknotes home in a bag.

Mitevski was found to have been siphoning money off Alpha Bank in the period 2008 - May 2010, when the crime was detected.

The investigation against him was opened in the fall of 2010, but Mitevski was detained as late as October 31, 2011.

The arrest was kept secret to allow investigating authorities to gather sufficient data and to avoid creating panic among Alpha Bank customers.

A handwriting analysis showed that Mitevski had been using documents with fake signatures to execute the fraud scheme.

The decision of the Sofia Appellate Court is final.
