Will Bulgaria Have a Stable Government After Yet Another Election in June? Our Readers Have Spoken
On our Facebook page, readers were asked about Bulgaria's stability after the June elections
Bulgaria's Prime Minister, Boyko Borisov, reiterated accolades for his former boss – ex Tsar (1943-1946) and PM (2001-2005), Simeon Saxe-Coburg.
Borisov spoke late Friday in the weekly political talk show of the Bulgarian National Television, BNT, Panorama, where he said Saxe-Coburg is the greatest Bulgarian politician.
The current PM was a personal bodyguard of the former Tsar, before he was elected to lead the cabinet, and later became Chief Secretary of the Interior during the term of Saxe-Coburg's party National Movement for Stability and Prosperity (NMSP).
"He has more weight than myself, current President, Geogri Parvanov, and President-elect, Rosen Plevneliev. He is a diamond we missed benefiting from. If he was to be Bulgaria's president now, the Netherlands would not have dared to veto our Schengen entry," Borisov stressed.
He pointed out that personally he was grateful to the former Tsar, because the latter made him Chief Secretary of the Interior and gave him a chance to be noted as politician.
"Even now the Tsar is the top rated Bulgarian politician internationally, but we failed to benefit from it. I did not nominate him for president simply because he had no chance of winning," the PM concluded.
The country's leader further commented on Parvanov, saying he was a much better political player than the leader of the opposition, left-wing Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP), Sergey Stanishev, who succeeded Parvanov at the post after he was elected president. Borisov, however, declined discussing the political future of the outgoing president, saying he did not interfere with the work of other political formations.
He also dismissed numerous reports of violations and manipulations in the October presidential and local elections, saying there had been problems every time Bulgarians went to the polls.
Borisov pointed out the decision to hold two votes in one day was made in order to save money in times of crisis, and gave high praise to his Deputy, Interior Minister, Tsvetan Tsvetanov, for the outstanding work he had done as Head of the Election Headquarters of the ruling Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria party (GERB).
The PM declared that the biggest loser in the elections is the ethnic Turkish party Movement for Rights and Freedoms, (DPS), because they have granted 350 000 ballots to BSP without receiving any gratitude in return.
Borisov also commented on news that his other Deputy, Finance Minister, Simeon Djankov, plans to close the State reserve, saying the issue will be debated Wednesday during the regularly scheduled meeting of the cabinet.
