The European Union is ready to help Turkey deal with the aftermath of the destructive 7.3 degree earthquake that shook the eastern Van province Sunday, said EU Humanitarian Aid Commissioner Kristalina Georgieva.

"Turkish authorities, the Red Crescent and many volunteers have asked us to join their efforts and Europe is ready to join," said the Bulgarian Commissioner Thursday.

According to her, Turkey, which initially refused international help, has requested the activation of the European civil protection mechanism, and that 6 EU member states have already offered tents for those left without homes.

Thursday Turkish authorities reported that the death toll from the quake is now above 520, and that the chances for rescuing of people alive from the rubble are getting slimmer.

Dozens of buildings were demolished by the earthquake and its aftershocks in the city of Van and neighboring towns around the Turkish border with Iran.
