A massive earthquake has jolted Eastern Turkey leading to material damages, according to initial report.

The US Geological Survey says its preliminary measurements indicate the earthquake that has struck eastern Turkey has a magnitude of 7.6 on the Richter scale.

Turkey's Kandilli observatory earlier gave it a preliminary magnitude of 6.6.

Both agencies say the quake occurred at 10:41 GMT Sunday. Its epicenter was in the village of Tabanli in eastern Van province, bordering Iran.

The earthquake at 1041 GMT was 94.5 km deep, according to the US Geological Survey.

According to the Anatolian Agency, the earthquake destroyed homes in its area, and was followed by aftershocks.

Turkey is located in a highly seismic zone. In 1999, a 7.4-magnitude earthquake claimed 18 000 lives in Western Turkey.

In 1941, the Van-Ercis earthquake with a magnitude of 5.9 claimed 192 lives.
