Libyan Rebel Commander Confirms Gaddafi's Death
Former Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi has died of his wounds inflicted upon him during his capture, a senior rebel commander has declared.
Abdelhakim Bel Haj, the NTC military chief, told Al Jazeera Arabic that news of Muammar Gaddafi's death has been confirmed. Bel Haj is the military commander who led revolutionary forces into Tripoli.
The body of Muammar Gaddafi is being taken to a top secret location in Libya for security reasons, an official of the Transitional National Council, Mohamed Abdel Kafi, told Reuters.
Libyan TV has reported that Col Gaddafi has been killed and his body is being taken to Misrata.
Gaddafi died of wounds suffered fighters battling to complete an eight-month-old uprising against his rule overran his hometown Sirte, Al Jazeera reported.
"Gaddafi's body is with our unit in a car and we are taking the body to a secret place for security reasons," Mohamed Abdel Kafi, a TNC official in the city of Misrata, is quoted as saying.
In spite of these confirmations, however, international media reports point out that Gaddafi's fate is still unclear. NATO has not even confirmed Gaddafi's capture yet.
Gaddafi was captured after the Libyan rebels overwhelmed his hometown and last bastion Sirte on Thursday, October 20, 2011, after a civil war that lasted nine months.
