LUNAR Festival 2024: Illuminating Sofia's Nightscape Once Again
Sofia's Lunar Festival of Lights is back, illuminating the city with more than 20 captivating light installations across its most iconic landmarks.
Business hotels in the Bulgarian capital Sofia have registered a 30% collapse in the number of visits, according to the Chair of the Tourist Association in SofiaRegion, Vitan Ivanov, cited by thexperts.bg.
The average occupancy rate of hotels in the country was 27%, compared to 22% in 2011.
The current average hotel stay of one tourist in Sofia is two days, according to Ivanov, who points out that hotel owners in Sofia are struggling to pay the so-called tourist tax over fewer business trips, congresses, and conferences.
In Sofia, five-star hotels pay the highest tax in the country – BGN 3 per bed. Ivanov says his organization will ask the Sofia City Hall to lower this tax to BGN 1.2 and set the tax for four-star and three-star hotels to BGN 1 and 0.4 respectively.
Some hotel managers in Sofia, however, counter Ivanov's claims of collapse. They are quoted saying that the latter's data is based on paid taxes, while for a number of hotels in the capital the main business is organizing different events, which is a source of significant revenues, even if there is a reduced number of overnight stays.
