The driver of the bus which careened down a mountainside near Yambol in May 2009, killing 18 people, committed a suicide attempt on September 16.

On 29 May 2009, a bus crashed into a group of people on the road to Bakadzhik peak near Yambol in Southern Bulgaria, killing 16 on the spot and leaving a number of injured.

The vehicle was later found to have been in poor technical condition.

The suicide alarm was raised Wednesday during a session of the Supreme Court of Cassation (VKS) on the case.

Mariyana Gardeva, lawyer of Gospodin Dimitrov, presented documents showing that the driver was suffering from posttraumatic stress disorder which prevented him from appearing in court.

VKS is to come up with a pronouncement on the case within one month.

The other defendant, Slavi Slavov, is the owner of the company which operated the technically unfit vehicle.

Slavov and Dimitrov were handed 10-year prison terms by the Burgas Appellate Court.

The two lodged an appeal, while the relatives of the victims demanded tougher penalties.

The Yambol District Court, the court of first instance, sentenced Slavov and Dimitrov to 13 years behind bars each.
