One of the major Bulgarian political parties – the opposition ethnic Turkish Movement for Rights and Freedoms had not nominated their own presidential candidate.

The news was reported by the Bulgarian Dnevnik daily after a check with the Central Electoral Commission, CEC, conducted upon the expiration of the deadline to register presidential candidates for the October 23 elections.

However, DPS as a party is registered for the presidential elections. It remains unclear if the Movement will endorse any other candidate of another political formation and/or if they will do it during the first round or will wait for a second one.

At the end of August, DPS high-ranking members, cited by Dnevnik, declared they would be the last ones to announce a possible presidential bid since for them "local elections are times more important."

A total of 18 couples of candidates for president and vice president have sought registration for the Bulgarian presidential elections, the Central Electoral Commission (CEC) announced Saturday night as the registration deadline expired.

The 18 candidate couples represent 11 political parties, one political coalition, and 6 initiative committees.
