Former Yugoslav army chief Momcilo Perisic was sentenced by The Hague's Internetional Criminal Tribunal to 27 years in jail for war crimes and crimes against humanity.

Perisic was convicted on charges of providing troops, ammunition and logistical support to rebel Serbs in Bosnia and Croatia, who are responsible for the Srebrenica massacre  and other war crimes, The Guardian informs.

The judgement is the first handed down by the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) against an official of the former Yugoslav Army for crimes committed in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

However, the highest ranking member of the former Yugoslav army was acquitted on charges that he was directly responsible for crimes as a superior officer to leaders of the Bosnian Serb forces.

Perisic, 67, was  Chief of the General Staff of the Yugoslav Army until 1998
