Libya's embattled dictator Muammar Gaddafi may have escaped to Algeria, it was reported Saturday.

As rebel forces were advancing towards Gaddafi's home town of Sirte, where it is believed he may be hiding, he may have crossed the country's borders.

A convoy of six armoured Mercedes vehicles that could be carrying high Libyan officials, allegedly including Colonel Gaddafi, has crossed from Libya into Algeria, the official Egyptian news agency, MENA, has said. The cars reportedly entered the border town of Ghadames on Friday morning.

"We think they (the cars) were carrying high Libyan officials, possibly Gaddafi and his sons,"  MENA's source said.

Algeria has not recognized the Transitional National Council as Libya's legitimate authority.

Earlier on Saturday, another report said Gaddafi has escaped to Zimbabwe on a jet provided by Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe.
