Libyan rebels have captured control of the Ras Jdir border crossing on Libya's frontier with Tunisia after beating dictator Muammar Gaddafi's loyalists.

The conquest of Rad Jdir is of great importance because now the rebels have an operational supply route to Tunisia running along the coast, leading into Tripoli from the west, Al Jazeera reported.

The green, red and black rebel flag has been place at the official buildings at the crossing after they took the post late Friday night.

Meanwhile, the situation in Tripoli is reported to remain tense, with Gaddafi loyalists continuing artillery attacks on Tripoli Airport.

The whereabouts of Libyan dictator Gaddafi remain unknown in spite of statements made Friday night by rebel officials that he had been trapped in Tripoli.
